Heidekaserne, Military barracks in Bad Düben, Germany
The Heidekaserne is a military barracks in Bad Düben with a sprawling complex of multiple buildings originally built for training and housing soldiers. The compound contains various structures from its military period, with some facilities still visible on the grounds today.
The compound served as a military installation from 1956 to 1990 for specialized units of East Germany's National People's Army focused on defense and explosives. Following the collapse of the socialist system, the barracks ceased military operations and the buildings were repurposed for other uses.
The site gained recognition when the 2004 film 'NVA' was shot here, documenting military life in East Germany and drawing attention to this location beyond the region. The production connected the barracks to a new way of remembering recent German history through cinema.
The grounds have been inactive since closure in 1997 and are partially used for storing construction materials, with development plans still in progress. Visitors should be aware that access to the compound may be limited due to ongoing changes and planning for future purposes.
In summer 2015, the grounds were transformed into an open-air theater venue where the performance 'Die große Dürre' took place. This temporary use showed how former military spaces could be repurposed as sites for cultural events and shared experiences.
