St. Bonifaz, Catholic church in Erlangen, Germany
St. Bonifaz is a Catholic church in Erlangen with a high central nave topped by flat wooden ceilings and flanked by narrow side aisles. Long, thin window slits along the walls allow light to reach the elevated altar area, creating even illumination throughout the interior.
This church was built between 1927 and 1928 following the architect Fritz Fuchsenberger's design. In 1940, it became an independent parish under the leadership of Ambros Neundörfer.
The church is named after Saint Bonifatius, a missionary who worked in Germany. Inside, visitors find artworks such as a Pietà and figures of Saint Joseph in the side chapels, giving the space religious meaning and reflecting the faith of the community.
The church is located near Erlangen's city hall and congress center, surrounded by university buildings and student services. This central location makes it easy to find and visit while exploring the downtown area.
Four large bells cast in 1954 produce one of the deepest bell sounds in Erlangen. This distinctive tone is heard throughout the city and marks the acoustic character of the church.
