León-Brücke, Steel footbridge in HafenCity, Germany.
The León-Brücke is a steel footbridge in HafenCity that runs from Dar-es-Salaam-Platz across the western end of Brooktor Harbor to Kaispeicher B. The structure combines a steel and wood railing system with a movable bearing that allows for temperature compensation.
The bridge opened in 2008 as Museum Bridge and was renamed in 2011 to honor Hamburg's partnership with León, Nicaragua. This renaming reflected the deepening of connections between the two cities.
The bridge connects visitors to the International Maritime Museum housed in the nearby Kaispeicher B building. It serves as a gateway for people interested in maritime history and seafaring traditions.
The bridge is comfortable for pedestrians and offers direct access to both sides of the harbor. Visitors may notice slight movements of the structure during significant temperature changes, which is normal and intentional.
The bridge features an unsupported 25-degree bend that is anchored by a 1000-ton concrete foundation. This unusual design required special engineering solutions to stabilize the 80-ton steel structure.
