Odense sits along the river that bears the same name and forms the urban center of Funen island with residential areas, commercial districts and several neighborhoods following the waterway. The city extends from the river mouth inland and connects historic quarters with newer housing developments.
The settlement named after the Norse god Odin received its town charter in 1335 and grew into a trading center on Funen. The canal built in 1804 connected the town directly to the Baltic Sea and enabled maritime commerce.
