The palace spans three islands in a lake, featuring red brick structures with decorative towers, turrets, and sculptural elements throughout its exterior.
Construction began in 1599 under architect Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder, replacing an earlier castle acquired by Frederick II in the 16th century.
The Danish Museum of National History within the palace displays the largest collection of portrait paintings documenting 500 years of Danish heritage.
Located 30 kilometers north of Copenhagen, the palace opens daily and offers guided tours through its state rooms, chapel, and baroque gardens.
The palace chapel contains Denmark's oldest functioning organ, built in 1610 by Esaias Compenius, with regular Thursday recitals for visitors.
