Schloss Brundlund, Art museum in Aabenraa, Denmark.
Schloss Brundlund is an art museum housed in a four-towered castle surrounded by a moat in Aabenraa on Denmark's east coast. The structure displays classical columns along its garden-facing facades and contains paintings and sculptures spanning several centuries.
Queen Margarethe I ordered the castle's construction in 1411, and it functioned as an administrative center and residence for the region for centuries. Over time its purpose shifted until it was eventually transformed into an art museum.
The castle reflects the artistic heritage of Southern Jutland through its collection of works by regional artists spanning multiple artistic movements. Visitors encounter how creative expression evolved from one era to the next within these exhibition spaces.
The museum sits at the southern edge of Aabenraa and is most easily reached on foot from the city center, especially by following the scenic waterfront paths. The surrounding gardens and waterway offer a peaceful walk before or after your visit.
At the northern end of the castle dam stands one of Denmark's oldest water mills from 1530, now operating as a summer weekend cafe. This small mill unexpectedly bridges industrial heritage with modern leisure enjoyment.
