Olgerdiget

Olgerdiget is an ancient defensive fortification near the German border consisting of multiple rows of palisades, moats, and ramparts. The structure extends across considerable stretches and controlled historic pathways crossing the peninsula.

The fortification was built in multiple phases during the first centuries after Christ, making it one of the region's early defensive structures. Archaeological findings show that construction work occurred over an extended period.

The structure marked a boundary between different settler groups whose distinct burial practices shaped how they used the land. This reveals how people in ancient times expressed identity through construction and tradition.

The monument lies in rolling terrain and is partially overgrown, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The best time to explore is during dry weather when the ground is more stable underfoot.

Among similar defensive structures across Denmark, this one stands apart because of its size and early construction. Archaeologists regard it as particularly important evidence of how this region was settled.
