Lilleborg

Lilleborg is a fortress ruins site on Bornholm standing on a rocky hill surrounded by protective walls that follow the natural cliff edges of the oval plateau. The stone structures show how the fortification was integrated into the surrounding terrain.

The fortress was built in the mid-12th century to replace an earlier structure. It fell to an attack in 1259 by a prince from Rügen.

The ruins reflect how power was divided between the Danish crown and church authorities during medieval times. The site tells of conflicts that shaped Bornholm during this era.

The site sits along the main road between Rønne and Svaneke in central Bornholm, making it easy to visit while exploring the island. Walking around the forested area gives the best view of the ruins and surrounding landscape.

The standing walls of the entrance tower display exceptionally thick stonework that reveals how robustly medieval fortifications were built. This powerful construction was critical to defending the stronghold from attackers.
