Gamleborg

Gamleborg is a Viking fortress on Bornholm island with substantial earthworks and defensive ramparts built on elevated terrain. The structure incorporates natural cliff formations on its southern side as part of its defensive design.

The fortress was built in the 8th century and served as the primary fortification on Bornholm island for centuries. Inhabitants eventually relocated their defensive stronghold to another location on the island.

Archaeological excavations at the site have revealed numerous artifacts that demonstrate the military strategies and daily routines of Viking society.

The site is accessible via marked walking paths with good views across the surrounding landscape from the elevated position. You can explore the earthworks and examine the fortification layout from various angles as you move through the accessible areas.

The fortress utilizes natural cliff formations rising 20 meters on its southern side, incorporating these geological features into its defensive system.
