The Sand-Covered Church

The brick tower rises 22 meters above the sand dunes, standing as the only visible portion of this 14th-century religious structure.

Built between 1355 and 1387, the church served its congregation until 1795 when persistent sand accumulation forced its closure and partial demolition.

The monument represents the constant interaction between Danish coastal settlements and natural elements, leading to its status as a protected ancient monument.

Visitors can access the church remains through marked paths in Skagen Klitplantage, with guided tours available during specific times throughout the year.

The original church structure, including its altar, remains completely buried beneath the sand dunes, while only the tower stands above ground.
