Slotsholmen is a small island sitting in Copenhagen Harbor and connected to the city center by nine bridges. The island houses multiple museums, including the Danish Arsenal Museum and the Royal Library, known as the Black Diamond.
A fortress first appeared here in 1167 under Bishop Absalon, laying the groundwork for what would become Denmark's seat of power. Over the centuries, new palaces replaced the original defensive structures and strengthened the island's role as the heart of governance.
The Christiansborg Palace shapes daily island life as the site where parliamentary sessions and court proceedings take place. You can see people moving through the courtyards and gardens as they go about their routines in this working governmental space.
Wear comfortable shoes when exploring, since you will cross bridges and walk between the museum buildings scattered across the island. The best views of the architecture and harbor come from walking around the perimeter of the island.
Each August, swimmers circle the entire island during an open water competition held in the harbor. This annual event brings athletes and onlookers together and shows the strong connection between the island and the surrounding waters.
