Regensen, Student dormitory in central Copenhagen, Denmark
Regensen is a student dormitory in central Copenhagen, situated next to the Round Tower on Købmagergade, and is one of the oldest of its kind in Denmark. The rooms have wooden floors and tall windows, and the building also holds shared spaces such as a banquet hall and a library used by all residents.
The dormitory was founded in 1623 by King Christian IV, who set it up to house students who could not afford private lodgings. Over the following centuries the building was renovated more than once, but it never stopped serving as student housing.
Students at Regensen take part in ceremonies and shared rituals tied to the building's long history as a place of student life. The location next to the Round Tower gives daily life there a character that few other student residences in Copenhagen can match.
The dormitory sits in the city center and is easy to reach on foot or by bicycle from most central neighborhoods. Since it is an active student residence, indoor areas are generally not open to casual visitors.
Residents of Regensen are organized into small groups called societies, each with their own internal competitions and celebrations that have continued for centuries. New residents inherit membership in one of these groups when they move in, which shapes their social life from the very first day.
