Royal Danish Playhouse, Modern theatre in Frederiksstaden, Denmark.
The Royal Danish Playhouse is a theatre building on the Copenhagen waterfront, built with dark brick at the lower levels and large glass panels on the upper floors. Inside, it holds three separate performance spaces of different sizes, each designed to suit a different kind of production.
The building was planned in the early 2000s and completed in 2008 as a new home for the Royal Danish Theatre's spoken word productions. It replaced older venues that no longer met the needs of a modern theatre company.
The playhouse draws a regular Copenhagen crowd for both contemporary productions and classic plays, mixing locals with visitors in its open foyer. From inside, the view over the water reminds you at every turn that the theatre was built as part of the harbour, not just beside it.
The theatre sits right on the harbour, a short walk from Nyhavn, and is easy to reach on foot from the city centre. Arriving early gives you time to walk around the outer terraces and take in the water views before a performance.
Part of the building extends directly over the water, so you can walk along the harbour edge and pass underneath sections of the theatre itself. This overhang is clearly visible from the waterfront path and gives the building an unusual presence above the surface of the harbour.
