Krudttårnet

Krudttårnet is a circular stone tower built in 1687, standing as the final remaining structure from the original citadel and positioned near the harbor. The thick walls of this building still show its original strength and its strategic importance for port defense.

The structure was relocated about 270 meters from its original site in 1974 to make room for expansion of Frederikshavn's shipyard. This extensive moving project took roughly 13 months and was a remarkable engineering achievement of that era.

The tower is now run by volunteer soldiers who keep the building active and share stories of maritime life with visitors. These caretakers connect the site to its past through their dedication and knowledge of naval traditions.

The interior of the tower is open to visitors who can explore exhibits on maritime history and view historical cannons. Climbing to the upper floors provides insights into the roof construction and offers views of the surrounding harbor area.

During summer months, visitors can witness traditional black powder salute shots at 8 PM as the sunset is greeted. This old seafaring tradition takes place regularly and gives the location a living and authentic character.
