Basnæs

Basnæs, Manor house in Skælskør, Denmark

Basnæs is a manor house in Skælskør featuring three corner towers rising across three floors, designed by architect Gustav Friedrich Hetsch. The building displays Gothic Revival architectural elements that define the character of the entire estate.

The estate was first documented in 1426 and initially belonged to Anders Jakobsen Lunge before passing through several noble families. Over the centuries it remained in the hands of the Krafse and Arenfeldt lineages.

Hans Christian Andersen spent approximately 15 months at Basnæs during multiple visits between 1855 and 1872 while staying with the Scavenius family.

The property covers a large area with extensive agricultural land and forest sections spread across the grounds. Visitors should allow adequate time to explore the different parts of the estate.

The writer Hans Christian Andersen visited the estate multiple times between 1855 and 1872 as a guest of the Scavenius family. This connection to one of Denmark's most celebrated authors remains part of the property's story.
