Collstropgrundene, Environmental contamination site in Hillerød Municipality, Denmark
Collstropgrundene is a contaminated forest area in Hillerød Municipality where industrial waste has left harmful metals deep in the soil. The site remains under active monitoring by environmental authorities to prevent further spread of pollutants to nearby land and water.
From 1936 to 1976, the Collstrop wood treatment company operated here, processing utility poles and power masts with metal-based preservatives. The industrial operations left behind deep soil contamination that was not fully understood until decades later.
The site represents a turning point in Danish environmental awareness, leading to increased regulations for industrial waste management and soil protection measures.
The site is closed to the public and cannot be entered due to ongoing environmental hazards and monitoring work. From the surrounding areas, you can observe the forest from a distance but should stay outside restricted zones clearly marked by authorities.
Scientific investigations discovered approximately 105 tons of arsenic buried in the soil, making this one of the nation's most costly environmental restoration projects. This exceptional level of metal contamination made the site a landmark case in Danish environmental management.
