Daugbjerg Kalkgruber, Protected chalk quarry in Viborg Municipality, Denmark
Daugbjerg Kalkgruber is a limestone quarry in Viborg Municipality with an extensive underground tunnel system. The network consists of numerous passages, with a section made accessible to visitors that remains cold year-round.
This site was used over 1000 years ago to extract limestone and flint, making it the oldest known limestone quarry in Scandinavia. Extraction continued steadily until operations stopped in the late 1800s.
The name refers to a long tradition of lime production that shaped local craftsmanship in the region. Visitors can still see the marks of this work in the tunnel walls and understand how central this place was to the community's livelihood.
Visitors should bring warm clothing since underground temperatures stay very low year-round. Access is provided through guided tours that keep the visit organized and safe.
Seven bat species make their home in the underground passages, using the cold tunnels as winter shelter. This makes the site an important refuge for threatened wildlife in the region.
