Aunsbjerg, Manor house in Viborg, Denmark
Aunsbjerg is a manor house situated on a medieval fortified site in Silkeborg. The main building and farm buildings are surrounded by partially preserved water-filled moats that still show the traces of the old defensive system.
The estate was first documented in the 16th century under Niels Eriksen of the Løvenbalk family. The family claimed descent from King Christoffer II, which gave the property additional importance.
The writer Steen Steensen Blicher stayed at the manor and created the story 'Skytten på Aunsbjerg' inspired by the estate's setting. The story remains connected to this place today, showing how the manor attracted creative people.
The current west wing was built on top of Mogens Gøye's house cellar using materials from the original construction. These reused elements give insight into how the building evolved over time.
The two islands on the property served different purposes at different times. The northern islet was the center of the estate during the Løvenbalk period, while the southern one only became the building site later.
