Kronborg Castle - Church, Lutheran castle church in Helsingør, Denmark
Kronborg Castle Church is a Lutheran place of worship inside Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, Denmark, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It features a richly carved altarpiece, painted ceilings, and original Renaissance furnishings that reflect the style of the late 16th century.
The church was consecrated in 1582 under King Frederik II, making it one of the oldest surviving castle churches in Denmark. After the great fire of 1629 that destroyed much of the castle, it was the only part of the complex left undamaged.
The church belongs to the St. Mariae parish in Helsingør and still holds regular services today. It also welcomes concerts and gatherings, partly because the space carries sound very well.
The church sits within the castle grounds in Helsingør and can be reached on foot from the town center. Those wishing to attend services or concerts should check current opening times and schedules in advance.
Although the church survived the 1629 fire without damage, it was later used for decades as a storage space for gunpowder and weapons. It was only between 1840 and 1843 that it was carefully restored and returned to use as a place of worship.
