Trækstien, Historic hiking trail along Gudenåen River in Central Denmark.
Trækstien is a hiking trail running about 74 kilometers from Silkeborg to Randers, following the Gudenåen River through changing landscapes. The path winds through meadows, forests, and wetland areas, staying close to the water throughout the journey.
In the 1800s, the path served as a working route where laborers hauled barges loaded with goods from the Silkeborg paper factory to Randers harbor. The trail was shaped by these daily transportation activities that connected inland production with coastal trade.
Historic taverns dot the trail, serving traditional Danish food and revealing how communities once depended on river commerce. They show the daily life and work rhythms of people who lived along the waterway.
The route divides into five sections, each with its own map for navigation. Check water conditions before starting, as certain areas can flood during rainy seasons or spring thaw.
The Facebook group Farbar Gudenå is maintained by regular users who share current water conditions and trail updates. This real-time information network helps hikers plan their visits based on firsthand reports from others who know the path well.
