BumZen, Far-left collective in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, Denmark
BumZen is a collective occupying two connected buildings at Baldersgade 20-22 in Nørrebro, functioning as shared housing and a hub for political activity. The space combines residential areas with gathering rooms and a bar for events and discussions.
The project began in 1986 when activists occupied abandoned buildings, later purchasing them in 1989 with support from musician Kim Larsen and other backers. This shift from squatted space to legal ownership represents a key turning point in its history.
A bar within the space hosts film screenings, discussions, and gatherings centered on social and political topics. These events shape how residents and visitors experience the collective as an active meeting point for community dialogue.
The location is accessible by public transport to the Nørrebro district along Baldersgade. Keep in mind it functions as a private community space where event times and visitor access may vary depending on activities.
The collective maintained its left-wing principles and autonomous decision-making structure even after transitioning from illegal occupation to legal ownership. This continuity shows how radical values and legal stability can coexist.
