Superkilen, Public park in Nørrebro, Denmark
Superkilen is a public park in Nørrebro that stretches 750 meters and features three color-coded areas: a red square, a black market zone, and a green park section. The different zones divide the space by function and create separate areas for sports, gathering, and relaxation.
After tensions in the neighborhood arose in 2006, architects developed this urban space that opened in 2012. The goal was to build connections between different resident groups through shared design.
The furniture and everyday objects come from the home countries of local residents, showing how public spaces look different around the world. Russian neon signs hang beside Armenian benches while visitors play on Spanish ping-pong tables.
The red zone works well for movement and sports while the black zone suits meetings and breaks. The green area invites picnics and offers quieter corners for relaxation.
Every object carries a plate with information in Danish and in the original language of its home country. A total of 60 nations appear through everyday items chosen by residents.
