Metropolis

Metropolis is a residential building in Sluseholmen that sits on an elevated peninsula and holds 44 apartments spread across 11 floors. The complex has a clover-shaped layout with four separate entry areas and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Sydhavnen harbor.

Completed in 2008, the building emerged as part of Copenhagen's harbor transformation from industrial areas to modern residential neighborhoods. This development represents a major shift in how the city used its waterfront.

The architecture references the harbor's maritime past through porthole windows and concrete surfaces shaped like mussel shells. These design choices connect modern living with memories of what this place used to be.

The building has four separate entrance areas that provide different access points to the apartments, and each unit features curved balconies facing the harbor. The elevated location provides natural protection from flooding while offering direct sightlines to the water.

The concrete exterior contains marble powder that creates a blue shimmer on the facade, and this effect shifts depending on how light hits the surface at different times. This material choice makes the building look visually different throughout the day.
