The Silo, 17-floor residential building in Nordhavn, Denmark.
The Silo is a 17-story residential high-rise in Nordhavn created from a converted grain storage building and wrapped in a galvanized steel skin. It contains 38 spacious apartments with tall ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, plus a rooftop restaurant.
The former grain storage building was thoroughly rebuilt by COBE architects between 2015 and 2017 and turned into homes. The original concrete structure inside was kept and reused as both a structural and design feature.
The building shows how Copenhagen's architects turn old industrial spaces into homes while keeping public areas accessible. The mix of private apartments and shared community spaces shapes how people use the area around it.
The building stands out visually with its distinctive steel exterior in the industrial Nordhavn area and is easy to spot from nearby streets. Public access is mainly at ground level where exhibitions are held and the rooftop restaurant, while the apartments themselves are private.
Exhibitions on the ground floor tell the story of how Nordhavn shifted from pure industry to a modern residential neighborhood. These displays show how the city transformed abandoned factory sites into lively communities.
