Ghardaia

The city features a network of white, pink, and red houses constructed with earth and clay, rising in terraces along the Mzab River banks.

Established in 1048 by the Mozabite Berbers, Ghardaia developed as part of a pentapolis system with four other settlements in the M'Zab Valley region.

The Mozabite community maintains distinct social practices, with the city divided into three walled sectors containing traditional markets and pyramidal mosques.

The municipality spans 590 square kilometers at 572 meters elevation, experiencing desert climate with temperatures ranging from 0°C in winter to 46°C in summer.

The urban design incorporates narrow streets and specialized architecture that maximizes shade during hot days while maintaining natural ventilation throughout neighborhoods.
