Beni Isguen, Fortified desert settlement in M'zab Valley, Algeria
The ksar sits on a rocky hillside with high defensive walls extending 1525 meters in length and reaching three meters in height.
Founded in 1347 by Ibadite refugees from Tahert, Beni Isguen developed into a military stronghold during the 16th century due to migration from Ghardaia.
The community follows strict social rules governed by El Aâzzaba council of elders, who maintain traditional Ibadite practices and knowledge transmission.
Visitors must arrange guided tours in advance and cannot enter during midday prayers or stay overnight within the town walls.
The marketplace Lalla Achou functions as a daily auction center where men conduct trade according to traditional regulations established centuries ago.
