Beni Isguen

Beni Isguen is a fortified settlement perched on a rocky hill with defensive walls enclosing the entire community. The town features narrow streets winding between stone buildings and a central marketplace where daily commerce takes place.

The settlement was founded in 1347 when Ibadite refugees sought shelter in this valley and established their community. Later during the 16th century, it developed into a fortified stronghold as the population grew with arrivals from neighboring areas.

The residents here maintain a tight-knit community life shaped by traditional Ibadite practices and the guidance of local elders. Daily routines and social interactions reflect these long-standing customs that define how people live together.

Arrange your visit in advance with a local guide who understands the community rules and can facilitate access to the main areas. Plan your visit outside of prayer times, when parts of the settlement may be restricted.

The central marketplace functions as a daily auction space where local traders conduct business following customs that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. This traditional trading system offers visitors a direct glimpse into how economic exchange continues in this community.
