Ksar Melika

Ksar Melika is a fortified settlement rising on an eastern hill above Wadi M'zab valley, built with traditional Mozabite defensive structures and interconnected narrow streets. The stone buildings form a compact arrangement designed for protection and water management.

The settlement was founded in 1355 as the final city established in M'zab Valley, built when the community needed to expand further. Its location near Agherm Ouadai offered advantages for long-term habitation.

The people living here follow Mozabite customs passed down through generations, with distinct clothing styles and family-based trades visible throughout the alleys. These practices shape how the community uses and maintains the settlement today.

Walking through the narrow streets requires comfortable shoes and patience to navigate the winding paths. Visit between October and April when temperatures stay moderate and exploration feels more pleasant.

Green ceramic production has deep roots here, with local artisans continuing to create distinctive pottery pieces using methods passed down through generations. This craft remains a defining feature of the settlement's daily work.
