Blida

Blida is a city located approximately 260 meters (850 feet) above sea level, positioned between the Tell Atlas Mountains and the Mitidja plain near Algiers. The Wadi el-Kebir river flows through the area, supplying water to local fountains and nourishing orchards known for their orange production.

Moorish refugees from Andalusia founded the settlement in 1553, constructing fortified walls with six defensive gates. This founding event established the initial character of the community and its defensive layout.

The Place d'Armes serves as the central gathering space where arcaded buildings blend French colonial design with local Algerian architectural traditions. This square reflects how different periods have shaped the way the city looks and feels today.

The terrain in the city center is relatively flat, though it becomes hillier as you move toward the surrounding mountains. Comfortable walking shoes are advisable when exploring the area and its surroundings.

The Stade Mustapha Tchaker functions as a major venue for Algeria's national football team, making it an important center for the country's sporting life. This stadium extends the city's role beyond its local community.
