Souk Ahras Province, Province of northeastern Algeria
Souk Ahras is a province in northeastern Algeria with varied landscapes across its territory. Mountains rise in the north while farming plains stretch across the south, with flatter ground in the middle sections.
The province came into being in 1984 when it separated from Guelma Province. The area was home to the ancient Numidian settlement of Thagaste, birthplace of Saint Augustine.
Berber communities in the region maintain traditional ways of living passed down through generations. In the villages, you can observe how these groups connect with the land and preserve their customs through daily practices.
The area can be reached through a network of main and secondary roads that provide connections across the region. An electrified railway offers transport links to nearby cities.
The name combines the Arabic word 'souk' meaning market with the Chaoui Berber word 'ahra' meaning lion. This recalls the Barbary lions that once roamed through the local forests.
