Djamaa El Djazaïr, Islamic religious complex in Mohammadia, Algeria
Djamaa El Djazaïr is a large religious complex in Mohammadia that covers an area of approximately 20 hectares and is known for its white marble prayer halls. The minaret reaches a height of 270 meters and dominates the coastline with its slender silhouette.
Construction began in 2012 during the presidency of Abdelaziz Bouteflika and was completed seven years later. The inauguration marked an important moment for Algeria as a symbol of national identity and modern development.
The name honors Algeria itself and reflects the national importance, while the architecture combines North African traditions with modern design. Visitors see elaborate calligraphy and mosaics in the courtyards that showcase local craftsmanship and religious art of the region.
The complex sits on the coast east of Algiers and is clearly visible from the city. Visitors should wear modest clothing and respect prayer times when exploring the publicly accessible areas.
The main prayer hall contains 618 octagonal columns that support the roof and give the space a rhythmic character. Engineers developed special techniques to secure the structure against earthquakes, as the region is seismically active.
