University of Science and Technology, Houari Boumediene, Public university campus in Bab Ezzouar, Algeria.
The University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene is a public university in Bab Ezzouar, on the eastern edge of Algiers. Eight faculties spread across a 42-hectare site with curving concrete buildings and wide courtyards.
The institution opened in 1974 after the science faculty from the University of Algiers relocated to this site. Additional departments and research centers were added in the following decades to meet growing demand for engineers and scientists.
Arabic and French shape daily life across the site, with most textbooks and lectures conducted in French. Students gather in large lecture halls and modern labs where they collaborate on technical and scientific projects.
Lectures run mostly in French, though some programs teach in Arabic. Visitors should note that large parts of the site are divided into separate faculty zones, and finding your way around takes some time.
Oscar Niemeyer designed the site in the 1960s during his exile in Algeria. His signature curves and open structures were meant to create a connection between education and the North African landscape.
