Central Army Museum, Military history museum in El Madania, Algeria
The Central Army Museum is a military museum in El Madania, Algiers, spread across several floors and displaying weapons, uniforms, documents, and artifacts from many different periods. Its collections run from prehistoric times to the modern era, tracing the country's military history in a broadly chronological order.
The museum opened in 1984 with the aim of documenting Algeria's military past from early civilizations through to the present day. It grew out of the country's desire to give visible form to a history shaped by repeated foreign presence and, ultimately, by the war of independence.
The museum displays personal items, uniforms, and weapons from across Algerian military history, giving a sense of the soldiers behind the objects. The exhibits focus on ordinary fighters as much as on major leaders, which gives the place a human scale.
The museum sits close to the Monument of the Martyr, which makes it easy to spot and to combine with a visit to the surrounding area. The exhibits cover several floors, so it is worth allowing enough time and wearing comfortable shoes.
Among the objects on display is a sword said to have been given by Napoleon III to Emir Abdelkader, a gift that passed between two former adversaries. The guillotine from Serkadji prison is also in the collection, an object that carries a very different kind of weight.
