Stade 20 Août 1955, Football stadium in Belouizdad, Algeria
Stade 20 Août 1955 is a football stadium in the Belouizdad district of Algiers, built around an artificial turf pitch with covered stands on three sides. It holds around 10,000 spectators and serves as the home ground for several clubs in the city.
The stadium was built in 1930 during the French colonial period, and after independence it was renamed to honour the events of August 20, 1955, a key moment in Algeria's fight for independence. Over the decades it became a regular venue for club football in Algiers.
Several local football clubs from the Belouizdad area use this ground for their home matches, drawing regular crowds from the surrounding neighborhoods. On derby days, the stands fill up quickly and the noise from supporters carries well beyond the gates.
The ground sits in the dense urban fabric of Belouizdad and can be reached on foot from several central parts of Algiers. On match days it is worth arriving a little early, as the entrances tend to get crowded in the final minutes before kick-off.
During a 1969 match between CR Belcourt and USM Alger, the ground reportedly drew around 23,000 people even though it was built for far fewer. This figure gives a sense of how deeply local rivalries could pull crowds well beyond what the space was designed to hold.
