National Library of Algeria, National library in Algiers, Algeria.
The National Library of Algeria is the official state library of the country, located in the El Hamma neighborhood of Algiers. The building spans several floors and contains reading rooms, storage areas, and dedicated sections for manuscripts, periodicals, and archival documents.
The library was founded in 1835 during French colonial rule, originally serving as a depot for documents seized from Ottoman and local sources. After independence in 1962, it was given its current national role and its collections were gradually expanded.
The library holds collections in Arabic, French, and Tamazight, reflecting the country's three main written languages side by side. Visitors can move between sections and notice how each language has its own dedicated reading space.
The library sits in the El Hamma neighborhood, not far from central Algiers, and is reachable by public transport. Access to the collections generally requires registration, so it is worth preparing the necessary documents before your visit.
The library has the legal right to receive a copy of every publication printed in Algeria, a system known as legal deposit. This means the collection grows automatically with every new book, newspaper, or official document produced in the country.
