Museum of Antiquities, Archaeological museum in Algiers, Algeria
The Museum of Antiquities in Algiers is a repository of ancient objects including sculptures, coins, and Islamic-period artworks. The items are arranged across multiple exhibition rooms that provide an overview of material culture from different eras.
The museum was founded in 1897 and built upon a collection gathered by Bertrand Clauzel in 1835. It was the first museum institution of its kind in Algeria and all of Africa.
The museum displays artworks spanning different periods of the region, from ancient sculptures to Islamic objects. These pieces tell the story of the various cultures that lived across North Africa over centuries and left their mark.
The building is located in central Algiers along Avenue Krim Belkacem. Visitors can purchase combination tickets that provide access to multiple cultural institutions within the complex.
A particularly remarkable statue from the 3rd century shows a child holding an eagle against its chest. The collection also preserves bronze fragments of an ancient horse that are rarely displayed.
