National Museum of Fine Arts of Algiers, National art museum in Algiers, Algeria
The National Museum of Fine Arts of Algiers is an art museum in El Hamma featuring European and North African works. The galleries spread across four levels and display paintings, sculptures, and decorative objects from several centuries.
The museum opened in May 1930 and built on an art society that Hippolyte Lazerges founded in the mid-nineteenth century. After independence, donations and acquisitions expanded the collection considerably.
The collection includes European art from the 14th century, Orientalist works from the 18th century, and pieces donated during Algeria's independence.
The building stands at Place Dar Essalem in El Hamma and is accessible by public transport. A full tour through all floors takes about two hours, depending on interest in individual works.
The upper floors offer views of a garden with an Italian pergola through large windows. Visitors can take a break between galleries there and observe the grounds from above.
