Belouizdad, Algerian commune in Algiers Province
Belouizdad is a residential neighborhood in Algiers, located about three kilometers southwest of the city center and part of the Hussein Dey district. The area features a mix of older Haussmann-style buildings with decorated facades and modern apartment blocks, crossed by main streets where people head to work daily and small shops open early.
The neighborhood was founded in the late 1800s as Algiers' first industrial suburb and saw major changes after independence in 1962. A cable car system opened in 1956, and the area was later partially renamed to honor revolutionary heroes during the post-independence period.
Belouizdad reflects the everyday routines of residents, with people gathering in cafes and spending evenings with family and friends. The local shops and markets showcase traditional goods sold by family businesses that have served the neighborhood for years.
The neighborhood is well served by public transport including two metro stations, train connections, and two cable cars linking different parts of the city. Visitors can easily walk around or use small taxis to move through the area.
The neighborhood was once home to the famous Hamoud Boualem factory, founded in 1878, whose beverages are still known and enjoyed throughout the region today. This factory remains an important employer and symbol of the area's industrial heritage.
