Kiipsaare Lighthouse, Concrete lighthouse at Harilaid Peninsula, Estonia.
Kiipsaare Lighthouse is a white and black striped cylindrical structure standing roughly 26 meters tall on the western coast of Saaremaa island in the Baltic Sea. The construction now sits partially in water and tilts to one side because of coastal erosion over the decades.
The lighthouse was built in 1933 about 150 meters (490 feet) from shore and functioned as a navigation aid for ships crossing the Baltic. Ocean dynamics gradually shifted and submerged it, transforming its role from a working structure to a landscape feature.
The structure appears in local storytelling as a symbol of how nature and human construction interact on these coasts. People who visit often reflect on its transformation from a working beacon to a natural sculpture.
This site is only accessible on foot, requiring roughly a 4-kilometer (2.5 mile) walk from a parking area through Vilsandi National Park. The terrain is flat and the path is walkable in most seasons, though rain can make the ground muddy.
The lighthouse appeared in the 2003 Estonian film Somnambuul and has since gained recognition in the country's film culture. Its visual transformation through encroaching erosion has made it a popular subject for photographers and artists seeking to capture changing landscapes.
