Villa Tammekann, Single-family detached home in Tähtvere, Estonia

Villa Tammekann is a residential building in Tartu with clean cubic architecture and a minimalist design approach. The structure features generous interior spaces, including a spacious living room and a distinctive open-fire fireplace positioned along an external wall.

Finnish architect Alvar Aalto designed this house in 1932 for Professor August Tammekann and his Finnish wife Irene. It was Aalto's first building project outside Finland and marked an important milestone in his career abroad.

The building houses the Granö Centre, a place where researchers from different countries come together to collaborate. It serves as a living hub for academics who meet here to exchange ideas and work on joint projects.

The house sits in a quiet residential area of Tartu and is easy to reach, with Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwaldi Street being a known reference point. Visitors should arrange access beforehand since the building is reserved for academic stays and events.

The building is the only known work by renowned architect Alvar Aalto in the Baltic states. It received the Europa Nostra cultural heritage award in 2001, underscoring its importance as an architectural landmark.
