Tondi, Residential subdistrict in Kristiine district, Tallinn, Estonia
Tondi is a residential subdistrict in the northern part of Kristiine, Tallinn, Estonia, made up of apartment blocks, schools, and government offices. The Tallinn-Paldiski railway line runs through it with a stop at Tondi station, and two tram routes also cross the area.
Between 1908 and 1910, the Tsarist army built barracks and artillery positions here, several of which are now listed as protected monuments. In the 1930s the area shifted away from military use and took on an industrial role.
The name Tondi traces back to Jobst Dunte, a merchant and mayor who once had a summer residence here. His former estate gave rise to Dunteni Park, which locals still use as a green gathering spot today.
Tondi is easy to reach by public transport, with the railway station on the Paldiski line and two tram routes connecting it to the rest of the city. The streets are straightforward to walk, making it simple to explore the area on foot.
Several of the original Tsarist-era barracks still stand in full view across the neighborhood, right next to modern apartment blocks. This side-by-side mix of old military and everyday residential buildings is something visitors rarely expect to find here.
