Ehalkivi, Protected glacial boulder in Letipea, Estonia.
Ehalkivi is a large granite boulder located on the Estonian coast in Letipea that rises approximately 8 meters above the ground surface. The rock formation extends roughly 50 meters in width and creates a prominent feature in the otherwise flat coastal landscape.
This massive rock formation was transported to its current location on the Estonian coast by glacial movements during the last ice age. The geological history of the boulder extends back tens of thousands of years when ice masses shaped the landscape of northern Europe.
The name Ehalkivi refers to the special phenomenon of the sunset disappearing completely behind the boulder when viewed from certain angles on the shore. Local people have long recognized this natural occurrence and named the site after this memorable visual event.
The best time to visit is during low tide when access to the boulder is easiest. Check weather conditions and tide tables beforehand, as rough seas or high tides can make the approach impassable.
This monument is noted for having one of the largest exposed surface areas among all glacial boulders in Estonia. Its impressive size led to its protection as a natural monument and makes it an interesting destination for those curious about geology and coastal formations.
