Otepää Church, Lutheran church in Otepää, Estonia

Otepää Church is a Lutheran church building in Otepää that sits on a hilltop with Gothic architectural features throughout its structure. Inside, low-hanging chandeliers and intricate wooden details adorn the walls and ceiling.

The church's initial construction took place in 1671, establishing it as a religious center for the region. A comprehensive reconstruction directed by architect R. Guleke in 1890 reshaped the building into its current form.

This church served as the site where the Estonian Students' Society consecrated their blue, black, and white flag in 1884, a moment that later defined Estonia's national identity. Visitors can sense the weight of this historical connection when walking through the space today.

The church is open to visitors interested in exploring its architecture while remaining an active place of worship with regular services. Visitors should be respectful of ongoing religious activities and adapt their timing accordingly.

Bas-relief sculptures near the gates commemorate the flag consecration and were installed in 1934, destroyed during Soviet rule, and restored in 1989. These artworks tell a story of destruction and rebuilding intertwined with Estonia's political past.
