Kanepi Church

Kanepi Church is a brick building with a tall tower topped by a morning star, and features a pseudo-Gothic altar inside. The interior displays paintings from 1857 that reflect the religious practices of the period.

Architect Friedrich Siegel designed this church as a replacement for an earlier wooden structure, constructed between 1804 and 1810. A lightning strike in 1831 damaged the building, leading to repairs that helped preserve it for the following centuries.

The church houses handcrafted objects that reflect the local religious tradition and community devotion. These items show how people equipped their place of worship across generations.

To visit the church, you should arrange access in advance since it functions as an active worship center and is not always open to casual visitors. The best time to explore is during quieter periods when the space feels less formal.
