Cairo International Airport, International airport in Cairo Governorate, Egypt.
Cairo International Airport is an international facility in Cairo Governorate with four terminals linked by an automated people mover. The complex spreads northeast of the city center across a wide area with three runways.
The site began as Bayn Field, an American air force base from World War II. In 1945 the location became King Farouk 1st Airport and opened for civilian traffic.
The name refers to the city that serves as the gateway to the pyramids and the Nile Delta. Travelers often see groups preparing for pilgrimages to Mecca or returning from them.
The facility lies roughly 20 kilometers northeast of downtown and is reachable by metered taxis, public buses and private transfer services. Travelers should plan time for visa formalities and baggage collection upon arrival.
Inside the terminals small displays show replicas of ancient Egyptian artifacts visible before passport control. Many travelers use the chance to get first impressions of pharaonic art before exploring the country.
