Great Temple of the Aten, Egyptian temple ruins in El-Amarna, Egypt
The Great Temple of the Aten features two principal structures, the Sanctuary and the Gem-Aten, connected by expansive courtyards spanning 300 meters in length.
Constructed during the reign of Pharaoh Akhenaten between 1353-1336 BCE, this temple represented the center of religious reform focused on the sun disk deity.
The temple design eliminated traditional enclosed spaces and roofs, allowing direct sunlight to reach worshippers as they conducted ceremonies and presented offerings.
Archaeological excavations at the site, which began with Flinders Petrie in 1890, continue to reveal foundations and artifacts from the Amarna Period.
The temple walls contained mud bricks measuring precisely 33-37 centimeters by 15-16 centimeters by 9-10 centimeters, dried under the Egyptian sun.
