Monesterio, municipality of Spain
Monesterio is a municipality in the province of Badajoz, in the Extremadura region of southwestern Spain. The center is compact and sits within a rolling landscape of oak groves and open pastures, where Iberico pigs are traditionally raised.
The settlement grew during the Middle Ages as a stop along the routes used to move livestock between summer and winter pastures, known as the Cañadas Reales. Over time the town developed around this herding tradition, which still shapes the character of the surrounding land.
Monesterio is strongly associated with Iberico ham, and this connection shapes much of what you see when walking through the center: shop windows, market stalls, and signs all point to this local product. Every year the town hosts a fair dedicated entirely to it, drawing visitors from across the region.
The center is easy to explore on foot since the main points of interest are close together. Spring and autumn are generally more comfortable times to visit, as summer temperatures in this part of Spain can be quite high.
Monesterio lies along the Via de la Plata, one of the oldest pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, used as a road since Roman times. Walkers passing through the town can still spot sections of this ancient route on the ground.
