Sineu is a municipality in the flat inland area of Mallorca, in the Pla de Mallorca region, with a compact old center built from local stone and narrow lanes. The town sits on a gentle rise surrounded by farmland and small rural estates.
In the Middle Ages, Sineu was the seat of the King of Mallorca, making it the main political center of the island at that time. This role brought wealth to the town and led to the construction of buildings that still define its appearance today.
The Wednesday market on the main square is one of the oldest on the island and draws farmers, traders, and visitors from across the region. Arriving early in the morning gives the best sense of the day, when fresh produce and livestock are actively traded.
Sineu is reachable by train from Palma, as the historic inland rail line stops here. Planning a visit on a Wednesday is a good idea, since that is when the market runs and most local shops are open.
The train station in Sineu is one of the few still-active stations in the island's interior and dates from the late 19th century. The building has changed very little and gives a good sense of what travel on Mallorca once looked like.
