Mercat de Sineu, Traditional market in Sineu, Mallorca, Spain
Mercat de Sineu is a weekly open-air market held in the center of Sineu, a small town in the heart of Mallorca. Every Wednesday, stalls selling fresh vegetables, meat, flowers, leather goods, and clothing line the streets and squares around the main church.
Trading in Sineu dates back to the 1300s, when the town's position at the geographic center of the island made it a natural meeting point for merchants. The tradition of direct commerce continued through the centuries, even as the range of goods on offer gradually shifted.
The market takes place every Wednesday around the church square, with many sellers coming from nearby villages. Locals use it as much for meeting neighbors as for shopping, which gives the whole event a relaxed, everyday feel.
The market runs on Wednesday mornings only, so arriving early gives access to the full range of goods before the stalls start packing up. The passages between stalls can get tight, so comfortable shoes make moving around easier.
A separate section of the market is dedicated to the sale of live animals, including chickens, goats, and sheep, a practice that has continued here without interruption since the medieval period. This kind of livestock trading is almost never found at other markets on the island today.
