Castillo de Guardias Viejas

The fortress stands on a small rocky hill by the Mediterranean Sea, featuring a central courtyard that connects to different military chambers and observation points.

The structure was commissioned by King Charles III in the 18th century to defend against pirates, then underwent reconstruction in 1817 following damage during the Peninsular War.

The castle maintains a permanent exhibition of Napoleonic period military uniforms and weapons, presenting the defensive heritage of Spanish coastal fortifications.

Visitors can access the castle Tuesday through Friday from 15:00 to 18:00 and weekends from 10:00 to 18:00, with no entrance fee required.

The strategic position of the fortress allows for extensive surveillance of both eastern and western coastlines, incorporating specific firing angles toward the Balerma tower.
