Camp dels Ninots

The Camp dels Ninots features lake sediments within an ancient volcanic crater, containing exceptionally preserved fossils from the Pliocene period.

The volcanic eruption occurred 3.5 million years ago through a maar-diatreme process, resulting from interactions between magma and underground water sources.

Scientists from multiple international institutions conduct research at the site, contributing to broader understanding of prehistoric fauna and geological formations.

Researchers access the site through eleven monitored boreholes that extend over 100 meters deep into the crater structure.

The discovered fossils include complete skeletons of tapirs, bovines, rhinoceroses, and turtles, preserved in their original anatomical positions.
